Apart from Queen Tiy, Nefertari was most likely the first Egyptian royal wife to be honored while still alive. A smaller temple near Ramesses' Abu Simbel temple honors Nefertari and the goddess Isis. This was a very unusual gesture because temples were usually dedicated to gods rather than mankind. Isis, who appears significantly in this story, possesses the key to life. Even though their features and outward appearances occasionally overlap, the major difference between Hathor and Isis is what they hold—for Isis, it is the ankh. Her position is confirmed by the fact that she was seen accompanying her husband on crucial travels such as a trip to Nubia to commission a new temple at Abu Simbel.

Nefertari is also depicted as being the same height as Ramesses, a rare occurrence that emphasizes her importance to the pharaoh. In this composite image, Isis leads her to Ma'at from the left, while Horus leads her to Isis from the right. Note Isis holds the Ankh, the key to life, in her right hand. Her story is written in hieroglyphs at the top.
