There are over 35 self-portraits by Vincent, but only one surviving portrait photo of him. The portrait depicts the artist at the age of 19 with a slightly stern expression. The majority of information regarding his appearance is derived from the numerous self-portraits he created. Records indicate that he had red hair, green eyes, and an angular face. However, each of these portraits displays unique characteristics. Vincent himself wrote, "People say – and I’m quite willing to believe it – that it’s difficult to know oneself – but it’s not easy to paint oneself either."
