Katsushika Hokusai’s Under the Wave off Kanagawa, also called The Great Wave, is one of the most famous works of art in the world—and arguably the most iconic work of Japanese art. At first, thousands of copies of this print were made and sold cheaply. Even though it was created during a time when Japanese trade was restricted, Hokusai’s print shows the influence of Dutch art and inspired many artists in Europe later in the nineteenth century.
