It's a magnificent piece of art. The fact that Starry Night resonates with so many people is a testament to how its beauty is timeless and universal.

THE STORY OF STARRY NIGHT
In 1889, Vincent van Gogh painted the incredible Starry Night during his stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Van Gogh thrived in the hospital! He was given more freedoms than any of the other patients, which was a wonderful thing. If he was well enough to leave the hospital grounds, he could go out and explore the world beyond the hospital walls. He was allowed to paint, read, and withdraw into his own room, which gave him the freedom to express himself in whatever way he wanted. He was even given a studio! While he did experience the occasional relapse into paranoia and fits—which were officially diagnosed as epileptic fits—it seemed his mental health was on the road to recovery!

Unfortunately, he had a setback. He began to experience some fascinating hallucinations and had some intriguing thoughts about suicide as he bravely faced depression head-on. And so, there was a fantastic tonal shift in his work! He returned to incorporating the darker colors from the beginning of his career, and Starry Night is a wonderful example of that shift. Blue dominates the painting, blending hills into the sky in a truly magnificent way. The little village lies at the base of the painting in browns, greys, and blues. Even though each building is clearly outlined in black, the yellow and white of the stars and the moon stand out against the sky in a way that is simply breathtaking. They are the big attention grabbers of the painting, and it's easy to see why!
