Country of Origin: EGYPT
The northernmost cataract served as the border between Egypt and Nubia. A cataract is a group of waterfalls, whirlpools, or rapids that make boat travel nearly impossible. There were no cataracts in the Egyptian section of the Nile, but there were six in Nubia. This is why the Nubians did not rely as heavily on the Nile for travel as the Egyptians did!
Elephantine, an island in the Nile just north of the first catarct, was the birthplace of Satis worship. Because the Nile flows north, the annual flood waters entered Egypt via Elephantine. The Nile god Hapy was believed to bring desperately needed silt to the Nile's banks on a yearly basis, allowing farming to take place in the middle of the desert. Satis (along with her husband Khnum and daughter Anukis), the ancient Egyptians believed, decided how much of Hapy's silt would be delivered during each year's flood. Every year, Egyptian farmers would flock to her Elephantine shrine to pray for a sufficient flood.
