One of the largest chariot battles in history took place during the Battle of Kadesh, also known as the First World War. The Egyptians under Pharaoh Ramses II and the Hittites under King Muwatalli II, who were supported by eighteen of their allied and vassal kingdoms, engaged in battle in 1275 BCE in what is now Syria.

Ramses II's invasion aimed to liberate Syria from the Hittites and retake the city of Kadesh from them. 2,500 Hittite chariots ambushed Ramses II's army after being misled by false information provided by Hittite spies to their Egyptian prisoners.

Most of the information about the war comes from Egyptian sources, which hailed Ramses II's triumph over the siege as the oldest detailed account of a military event. Some historians disagree and believe that because Ramses' military goal was not met, the Hittites won the battle.
