PRIAPOS (Priapus) was the Greek god of gardens. He also guarded beehives, flocks, and vineyards.

Priapos was portrayed as a dwarfish man with a large member, symbolizing garden fertility, a peaked Phrygian cap, indicating his Mysian origins, and a basket laden with fruit.

His cult was brought to Greece by Lampsakos (Lampsacus) from Asia Minor, and his mythology was later reinterpreted. To promote fertility, primitive statues of the god were placed in vegetable gardens. These also served as scarecrows, keeping birds at bay.

Priapos was associated with several phallic Greek deities, including Dionysos, Hermes, and the satyrs Orthanes and Tykhon (Tychon).

A well-known Pompeiian wall fresco (right or above) depicts the god weighing his phallus against garden produce. He wears a peaked Phrygian cap, Phrygian boots, and has a Bacchic, cone-tipped thyrsus by his side.
