The Battle of Kadesh took place between the forces of the Egyptian Empire under Ramesses II and the Hittite Empire under Muwatalli II at the city of Kadesh on the Orontes River, just upstream from Lake Homs near the modern Syrian-Lebanese border. The battle is generally dated to 1274 BC in the conventional Egyptian chronology, and is the earliest battle in recorded history for which details of tactics and formations are known. It is believed to have been the largest chariot battle ever fought, with a total of between 5,000 and 6,000 chariots.

King Ramses II rides on a chariot, bow and arrow drawn. The scene is from the famous Battle of Kadesh, one of the greatest battles of the time. It was fought between the two largest empires of the time, Egypt and the Hittite Empire, for control of the territory that is now Syria. There are several illustrations of Ramses II standing on the chariot and you can find them under the names: Ramses II storming the Hittite fortress of Dapur, Ramses II conquering the Nubians, Ramses II on chariot.

Pharaoh Ramses II (RAM-seez) ruled from about 1290 to 1224 B.C., during the New Kingdom. Known as Ramses the Great, he is one of the most famous pharaohs. He reigned for more than 60 years, longer than almost any other pharaoh. He is best known for his military leadership and for building numerous monuments.

Rameses used his power to excess. He had over 100 wives and over 100 children. Never shy about his importance, he had hundreds of statues of himself erected throughout Egypt. Some were over 60 feet tall.
