Country of Origin: EGYPT

Since ancient times, the Egyptians have performed the "opening of the mouth" ceremony to restore consciousness to the deceased. The ritual allowed the mummy to serve as a vessel for the ka and ba of the deceased.

Interestingly, references to the ritual always emphasize the use of an iron hook, although iron was rarely used by the Egyptians.

Reanimation rite, in Egyptian religion, rite to prepare the deceased for the afterlife, performed on statues of the deceased, the mummy itself, or statues of a god in a temple. An important element of the ceremony was the ritual "opening of the mouth" so that the mummy could breathe and eat. The rite, which symbolized the concept of death and regeneration of the Osiris myth (in which the dismembered god Osiris was reassembled and given life), was performed in the sculptor's workshop if it was a statue, but in the case of a mummy it was performed at the entrance to the tomb. Through this rite, it was believed that the statue or mummy would be endowed with life and strength so that it could enjoy the daily funeral service performed in front of its tomb. In the case of temple statues, the ceremony was incorporated into the daily temple ritual.
