Country of Origin: EGYPT
The Egyptian papyrus painting depicts Maat, the goddess of truth and justice, kneeling before the goddess Isis. She spreads her wings to protect the cartouche containing the name of Queen Nefertari.
In art, Isis was originally depicted as a woman wearing a long sheathed dress, sometimes holding a lotus, or as a sycamore tree. After assimilating many of Hathor's roles, Isis' headdress was replaced by Hathor's: the horns of a cow on her head, with the solar disk between them. Most often, Isis is seen holding only the generic ankh-sign and a simple staff. Maat or Mayet, probably pronounced (Muh-aht), was the ancient Egyptian concept of truth, balance, order, law, morality, and justice. Maat was also personified as a goddess who regulated the stars, the seasons, and the actions of both mortals and gods, and who brought order to the universe from chaos at the moment of creation. This scene is taken from Hathor at Denderah.
