Hunefer is escorted into the courtroom on the left by Anubis. Anubis is also shown presiding over the rating scales. The pot represents Hunefer's heart, while the feather represents Maat, the established order of things, or, more specifically, "what is right" in this context. According to the ancient Egyptians, the heart represented both the positive and negative aspects of a person's life because it was the seat of emotions, intellect, and character. If the heart did not balance with the feather, the deceased would perish and be devoured by the terrible "devourer," the strange creature depicted above that is a cross between a crocodile, lion, and hippopotamus.
