Egypt papyrus with Anubis which is the Greek name for the ancient Egyptian god of death, mummification, embalming, the afterlife, cemeteries, tombs, and the Underworld, who is usually depicted as a canine or a man with a canine head. Anubis, like many ancient Egyptian deities, played multiple roles in various contexts. Anubis, who was depicted as a grave protector as early as the First Dynasty (c. 3100 - c. 2890 BC), was also an embalmer. By the Middle Kingdom (c. 2055 - 1650 BC), he had been replaced as lord of the underworld by Osiris.

One of his most notable roles was that of a god who guided souls to the afterlife. He stood on the weighing scale during the "Weighing of the Heart," which determined whether a soul could enter the realm of the dead.
