This painting of a colorful outdoor scene is a beautiful, relaxing piece. It seems to capture the joy of simply enjoying the beauty of nature without any moral concerns. It brings to mind Van Gogh's sentiment, captured in his writings, that "the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day."
The color is more intense, and the eye naturally moves along the smooth or rounded edges of neighboring areas—irregular shapes that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. It's tough for the eyes to divide this space into large object and background themes. The distant and nearer parts are equally distinct.
The yellow of the cafe contrasts with the blue-black of the street and the violet-blue of the door in the foreground. The strongest point of contrast is where the awning's blunt corner touches the sky. The lines that go into the distance, like the lintel of the door, are perfectly aligned with the lines that run parallel to the slope of the yellow awning and the roof of the house above. For this free-moving, unengaged vision, the upward dimension is just as important and expressive as the depth.
