Country of Origin: EGYPT

One of the eight primordial Egyptian deities was Amun, the god of the air. Amun's role evolved over time; during the Middle Kingdom, he was the King of the Deities, and during the New Kingdom, he was a nationally worshiped god. Amun-Ra was formed when he merged with Ra, the ancient sun god.

It is believed that Amun created himself and then everything else in the universe, but then separated himself from it as "the original inscrutable and indivisible creator." When Amun and Ra united, he became both a visible and invisible deity, appealing to the ancient Egyptian concept of Ma'at, or balance.

Amun has been represented as a goose, snake, or ram, as well as a man with the head of a ram, frog, royal cobra, crocodile, or ape.

Amun-Ra was the pharaoh's father and protector, and he was the subject of a cult. The cult of Amun had a complicated relationship with royal women; Queen Nefertari was dubbed "God's Wife of Amun," and female Pharaoh Hatshepsut claimed she had the right to rule because her mother was impregnated by Amun, and thus being his daughter empowered her ascendancy.

Amun revealed his will and desires through the use of priest-controlled oracles. Amun had a priestly following that was overthrown by Pharaoh Akhnaton when he replaced Amun worship with Aton worship. This change only lasted for one monarch before being reversed by priests who controlled Akhnaton's son, Tutankhamun, also known as King Tut.

Role: A god of the earth's creation; the patron god of Thebes; and the king of all Egyptian gods.
Form of a man wearing a crown with a sun disc and double feather plumes. Blue skin is sometimes depicted.
Ram and goose are sacred animals.
Thebes is a religious center.
Relationships with other gods: In early mythology, he was the husband of Amaunet; in later mythology, he was a member of the Triad of Thebes (husband to Mut, father to Khonsu)
